The causes of sleep deprivation can be psychological, physical or a combination of the two. Sleep disorders are a growing phenomenon as many millions of Americans suffer from deprivation of sleep. We are all aware that sleep is essential to our well being and yet many of us walk around each day sleep deprived. Sleep gives us energy, a clear mind and the capacity to go about our day. It is as essential to good health as exercise and proper nutrition. Unfortunately in today’s world many of us do not get the sleep we need and require to properly function through the day.

There are number of causes of sleep deprivation. People who do not get at least six hours of sleep on a regular basis each night can suffer from deprivation of sleep as well as other sleeping disorders. There are four main causes of sleep deprivation: lifestyle, medical conditions, medications, and clinical sleep disorders. Lack of sleep over time can lead to poor health, illness and increased risk of injury.

Lifestyle is a main cause of sleep deprivation. A poor diet, excessive and regular consumption of alcohol, drinking too much caffeine, and working the night shift can all affect ones ability to get a good night sleep. Making small changes to your lifestyle could improve your ability to sleep significantly.

Another cause of sleep deprivation is an existing medical condition. In this case the deprivation of sleep can be a symptom of the medical condition. For example, an asthma attack in the evening can affect your regular sleep pattern. Emotional and physical effects that result from the medical condition can indirectly cause deprivation of sleep.

Medication is yet another cause of sleep deprivation. It can alter your body’s normal rhythm thereby altering your sleep pattern and causing tiredness, an inability to fall asleep and insomnia. Always make sure to let your doctor know if you are suffering from deprivation of sleep particularly if you are on a new medication or a larger dose of your current medication.

Clinical disorders are another cause of sleep deprivation. If the cause of one’s deprivation of sleep is not obvious, one could be suffering from a clinical sleep disorder. Insomnia and narcolepsy are sleep disorders that could be the result of an underlying problem. One such problem could be restless leg syndrome. The urge to move the legs in the middle of the night, after waking, shortly after getting into bed or even while wide awake are possible signs of restless leg syndrome. Insomnia can be a result of restless leg syndrome. Other symptoms of this condition include kicking or twitching leg movements during sleep and possibly when awake. Sleep apnea is another underlying condition that can result in deprivation of sleep. It is a medical condition where, due to fatty tissue, the throat closes off for very brief amounts of time while you sleep. As a result you are jarred awake continually during the night, without necessarily being aware of it, and you always wake up feeling tired. There are many causes of sleep deprivation. In today’s world many of us do not get the sleep we need. If you are affected by lack of sleep or always feel tired you may be suffering from a sleep disorder that could be a result of lifestyle, a medical condition, medications, or a clinical sleep disorder.
